Life can be an exhausting whirl of work, bills, and responsibilities just the endless list of adulting tasks is never-ending! Sometimes we all need a break. For me, I tend to step outside and look up at the sky. The official term is cloudspotting, no longer just for daydreamers or poets but fun for anyone with imagination and some spare minutes on their hands.
It is an incredible reminder that there’s an expansive, beautiful world out there that’s constantly changing with an abundance of forms and colors to delight us. There’s something truly magical about gazing up into the sky and watching fluffy cotton candy-like structures form one shape, then another, in an infinite sky-high theater show that invites us to imagine, wonder, and wander without ever leaving our spot.
The beauty of cloud watching lies in its simplicity. There are no rules to follow or equipment needed; all it requires are your eyes! A way for us to temporarily step outside ourselves and simply be present and engaged with the world.
But watching clouds is more than a mere pastime; it can also be an educational journey. Over time, you’ll begin recognizing different kinds of clouds, from flat, featureless stratus to towering cumulonimbus, which produce dramatic thunderstorms; you’ll discover altocumulus, cirrocumulus, and nimbostratus, which will not only be fun to say aloud at your next barbecue or picnic but will impress friends with your newfound knowledge! This has actually become a ‘thing’ between my fiance and me because I learned about clouds in college and would tell him the type of clouds in the sky. He now loves to share the names of the clouds he sees, taking us back to that early moment of courtship.
Obviously, this is an enjoyable hobby to share, whether with children, significant others, or friends—everyone can join in! Imagine spending an enjoyable Sunday afternoon lying together in the grass, pointing out and laughing at all the strange shapes seen, such as unicorns galloping, a ship sailing through the sky, or a dog chasing its tail!
In our always-on world led by digitally driven lives, looking to the sky has allowed me to slow down, disengage from technology, and reconnect with the world. Â It’s an ode to creativity, a practice of mindfulness, and a celebration of the natural world that too often goes unnoticed above us.
